once, to former WWI ace Hermann Göring on July 19, 1940.

The Knight's Cross to the Iron Cross with Golden Oak
Leaves, Swords and Diamonds.
(German: Das Ritterkreuz zum Eisernen Kreuz mit Goldenem Eichenlaub,
Schwertern und Brillianten)
The second highest military decoration was also awarded only
once to the Ju87 Stuka ace Hans-Ulrich Rudel.

The Third Reich's highest regularly awarded military decoration
was awarded to 12 Luftwaffe pilots during WWII.
Recipients include the ace of aces Erich Hartmann who
shot down 352 airplanes between 1942 and 1945. Erich Heartmanns
record is unlikely to be equalled ever again !
